Another Strange Choice

Another interesting design choice for my blog hit me the very first day I attended Cal State L.A. I found the names or titles outside the various building at Cal State Los Angeles to be a perfect example of contemporary design. The design is very simple with clean lines and a very modern font that isn’t too dramatic or in your face. Font decisions are very important depending on the type of feeling or vibe you want to present or create. You wouldn’t use a very renaissance to medieval like font for the labels in Cal State L.A. because it wouldn’t fit the overall mood that institution is about. Instead the font that was used is a very modern and easily read font that presents an overall professional feeling.

The decision to use metal also serves as an example of both form as well as function. Not only is the metallic color reflective enough to draw people’s attention it also makes the lettering easier to read too and this is especially important when you’re in a rush to find a specific building. The metallic lettering is also placed on top of red bricks. This creates a sense of contrast that makes the lettering pop out more to the viewer rather than blend in. Again this decision could have been on purpose since labels or titles for building need to be easily read.
