This refrigerator magnet has been sitting in my room since
my good old high school days. We were given these magnets as part of a gift
basket which was for a club called the Renaissance Club. It was for members who
did well academically which surprise me since I actually hated math and
history. The magnet itself is very well designed. The use of the old medieval
style font fits perfectly with the overall theme of the renaissance club which
is to promote a renaissance of knowledge. Making a connection between the
design style and the content helps the viewer better understand and form an
overall picture of what the designer is trying to convey.
I also find it unique
that instead of spelling out the entire word “Venice High” underneath the image
of the school mascot, it was actually shorten into just “Venice Hi.” This could
have been done on purpose to represent the more popular slang of “Hi” for “High
School” which is the targeted audience of the design. Something that I would
change is that I would make all the fonts the same. Notice how only some
portions of the text in the magnet is in an old medieval style font. It would
be more consistent and easier and less distracting for the viewer if all the
fonts used the same font type instead of having it sectioned off. As visual
communicator we have to make the design intriguing as well as easy to read and
understand. Right now it is kind of distracting with the different style use so
a more consistent style using the medieval letter from would help immensely.
